The Friends of the Bendigo Cemeteries was formalised in 1993 (Inc AOO28642K) after several public meetings discussing the terrible state and lack of maintenance of the Bendigo district cemeteries. Some of our aims are to promote interest in the history and heritage of the cemeteries using press articles, self-guided tour brochures, recording of data, and talks to interested groups.

Another project was to photograph all the tombstones, fences or wooden remains that existed in 1995 only in the older sections of the cemeteries. These photos and data sheets are all stored in the Bendigo Library. Many of these tombstones have since been vandalised so these data sheets give good evidence of what existed almost 15 years  ago.

Further information can be obtained from the Bendigo Information Center, the Golden Dragon Museum and in the excellent book written by our member Carol Holsworth, Chinese Memorials and Memories –  The White Hills Cemetery, Bendigo.
